The sweet taste of literacy

COEUR d’ALENE — Two years ago, the Well-Read Moose gave out over 300 books in the name of Halloween fun.
After canceling the event last year, they aim to do it again.
With a twist.
Instead of settling down on the shop floor to hear spooky stories as before, this year's visitors can drive or walk through the pop-up tent out front to get a brand-new book, plus a sweeter kind of treat. Owner Melissa Demotte will be dressed in her tried-and-true Cat in the Hat costume.
“We weren’t comfortable with so many people gathering inside so we had this hybrid idea,” Demotte said.
Demotte said staff didn't want to skip the event again.
“We believe in promoting literacy,” Demotte said. “And we have realized that not everyone can afford new books.”
The event has been held for about the past five years and draws a crowd.
This year, staff is prepared with over 300 books either purchased by the store or provided by publishers. Children up to age 12 are invited to cruise through and score a sweet treat.
According to tradition, employees will be in costume while wearing a face-mask.
“The kids love coming in their costumes,” said employee Melanie Chun.
Trick-or-treat for a Book will open from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. today.
Well-Read Moose is at 2048 Main St. in the Riverstone shopping center.
