Idaho law enforcement agencies are combining to prevent deadly crashes as the “100 deadliest days” of summer draw to a close.

Extra DUI patrols will continue through Labor Day weekend.

The 100 deadliest days is the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when fatal crashes increase dramatically.

More than 75 people died on Idaho highways during that period in 2020-21, according to the Idaho Transportation Department Office of Highway Safety.

“Most folks actually make the right choice, and that’s appreciated,” said Idaho State Police Lt. Marvin Crane. “But for those who don’t, troopers are on the roads looking for them before they hurt themselves or someone else.”

ISP joins more than 60 law enforcement agencies around the state, including the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, in this final push to end the summer travel season safely.

Everyone can help prevent impaired driving.

“Caring enough about yourself and others means planning not to drive impaired,” Crane said.

Plan for a safe ride by choosing a sober designated driver or arranging for a ride share service or taxi.

Offer nonalcoholic beverage options at events where alcohol is served.

Wear a seat belt — it’s the best defense against impaired drivers.

If you see what could be an impaired driver on the road, call 911.

Community Library Network’s new policies could fracture regional library consortium

For decades, the Community Information Network has enabled libraries in North Idaho and eastern Washington to share their collections and broadened patrons’ access to materials. Now a restrictive policy for minor library cardholders in the Community Library Network, unlike any other in the library consortium, could mean that patrons across the region lose access to library materials.
