I have deep North Idaho roots and graduated from Eastern Washington University with an English degree with a creative writing emphasis with a minor in film. I worked at at the Bonner County Daily Bee before coming to work at the Bonners Ferry Herald in August 2021. I enjoy writing for the paper that my great-grandfather read and covering the same small town community that is still alive today. I cover all things Badger sports, local politics and government, community news, business, outdoors and appear on the 7Bee podcast for the Herald's update. When I'm not working I can be found reading a good book and sipping tea, knitting or attempting to sign opera. | September 4, 2021 1:00 AM
SANDPOINT — Lake Pend Oreille School Board trustee Gary Suppiger has announced his plans to run for a second term in the upcoming November elections.
In announcing his reelection bid, Suppiger cited his desire to keep rolling out successes for students and teachers in LPOSD schools.
First elected in 2017, Suppiger said he has been a consistently responsible conservative on the board with a focus on spending accountability. In addition, he said his focus has been on school choice options, and local control of curriculum and health safety.
Not only is LPOSD the only district in the state to give a complete breakdown of how levy dollars are spent, it is also one of just a few districts with free full-day kindergarten.
Suppiger has worked with his fellow trustees to make school options a priority, boasting numerous after-school programs, an alternative high school and two homeschooling programs, said his campaign.
LPOSD remains whole through COVID-19, but Suppiger credits parents and teachers for that success, not the school board.
“Parents and teachers really stepped up and made responsible decisions for their students. We had very low infection rates with no confirmed cases of transmission at school. We are the only school district in North Idaho to finish the 2021-2022 school year with the same plan we started with,” Suppiger said.
Suppiger is looking forward to more successes with students’ activities, full day kindergarten, elementary after school program, facility maintenance and improvements if he is re-elected.
Suppiger will be speaking at a Reclaim Idaho event for the Quality Education Act at 10 a.m. today, Sept. 4. For more information, go online to his Facebook page, @SuppigerForSchools.
