St. Regis volleyball splits with Mullan, Charlo

With apologies to Charles Dickens, but for the St. Regis High School volleyball team this week was “the best of times, it was the worst of times” as the Lady Tigers thrashed Mullan, Idaho, on Thursday, then were swept by traditional power Charlo this past Saturday afternoon.
In their meeting with Mullan, which joins forces with St. Regis as a co-op football partner but not other sports, St. Regis was dominant from the beginning as they swept the Idaho version of Lady Tigers, 3-0.
St. Regis came out rocking in the opening set of the Mullan match, with their high energy game producing an early, insurmountable lead in taking the opener 25-8.
There was not much different in set two as the St. Regis squad, known for having fun on the court and diving for loose balls from the beginning of a match until the end cruised to a 25-10 set win and a 2-0 match lead on their home court in St. Regis.
In the third and deciding set, Mullan found a rhythm that enabled it to stay with the Montana version of Ladly Tigers. In a set that saw several ties and lead changes, St. Regis was able to hang on and pull out the narrowest of victories, 25-23 to secure the three-set sweep.
The win against Mullan raised their season record to 2-0, not counting matches played in the Mission pre-season tournament a week ago.
Saturday night was a different story for the girls in green and gold.
In that match, Charlo used its superior height and experience to grab a convincing 25-12 win over the outgunned St. Regis six. And as was the case against Mullan, the second set mirrored the first with Charlo again dominating the floor and net in grabbing a 25-11 set win and a 2-0 match lead.
Equally as eerie was the outcome of the third and final set, when the two teams battled back and forth in a lead-changing scenario like the St. Regis win from two days earlier.
And as was the case against Mullan, it was Charlo that found just enough to secure a 25-22 win and lock up a three set sweep.
The Lady Tigers will get a chance to get back on the winning track this Thursday with a return match against Mullan, this time on Idaho soil. They will then travel to Noxon for a Saturday match with the Lady Red Devils.
