Sept. 12, 1971 – KALB IS THE MAN

Last week’s Mr. Who’s Who, Robert Kalb, was born in Sandpoint and attended schools in Sagle and Sandpoint, graduating from Sandpoint High in 1945. He entered the U.S. Navy and served aboard the battleship USS Iowa. After his discharge, Kalb became a student at Farragut College at the former Farragut Naval Training Center. He graduated from the U of I in 1955 with a major in marketing, after a two-year interruption when he was drafted by the Army in the Korean conflict. He worked for the Ben Franklin Store here from 1955-1965, most of those years as manager. He bought Benoit’s Bootery from J.C. Benoit in 1965 and moved the store to [109] Cedar street last year. Kalb takes time from his busy shoe store for considerable extra-curricular activity. He is in his eighth year on the City Council and is a member of the Idaho fish and Game commission, appointed in 1969 by Gov. Samuelson. Kalb, who has been an active sportsman for many years, likes to fish the high mountain lakes and has helped plant the high lakes in the county for several years. An avid elk hunter, he loves hunting in the Lochsa country. Kalb and the former Arlene Perry were married in 1956. The couple has three sons who like to fish the high mountain lakes like their father.

Sept. 12, 1921 – NOTED PIANIST COMING

Noted New York pianist Eugene Bernstein will appear at the Sandpoint Presbyterian church at 8 o’clock Thursday under the auspices of the Civic club. A Russian who adopted New York city for his home, he comes with the recommendations of the ablest critics of the world. Good pianists are not unknown in this city, but seldom does there come an artist of such renown as Eugene Bernstein.

CIVIC CLUB HOLDS SUNNYSIDE PICNIC

The Civic club will hold a picnic Monday at the home of Mrs. Sires at Sunnyside. Mrs. Sires, who assures all of a “sweet” time, will show her bees and modern honey-making methods. A cordial invitation is extended to all women in Ponderay, Kootenai and around Sunnyside to join the picnic.

CULVER-ODEN NEWS

The first killing frost arrived Sept. 10, followed by a cold wind that froze just about everything.

Both Oden schools began Sept. 12.

Ole Peterson is laid up with a badly crippled leg. The affliction came on almost instantly Saturday while he danced at Oden, but he does not know the cause.

LOCAL BRIEFS

Ben Ewen and wife [Eleanor] are recent newcomers to Bonner county from Custer, Mont. They are here to buy a farm and locate.
