Quick and painless could probably be a phrase used to describe the Superior Bobcats’ 62-6 dismantling of the visiting Troy Trojans last Friday night.

Except this was a Montana 8-man football game and there were no doubt some serious bumps and bruises being taken care of Saturday morning in Trojanville.

The quick would be in reference to watching Superior pile up a 30-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. And the painless would be the fact the Mercy Rule was at hand and the clock was running non-stop, thereby reducing at least the length of exposure to the hurting going on.

Needless-to-say, the Bobcats thumping of the Trojans kept Superior unbeaten at 3-0 on the year with a big time football showdown against also unbeaten Thompson Falls (3-0) scheduled for this Friday night on the Blue Hawks home field.

The loss also kept Troy winless on the 2021 season, at 0-3.

As has been the case so far in their successful start to the football year, the Bobcats got outstanding production from their dynamic passing/receiving duo of junior quarterback Orion Plakke and speedy senior receiver Decker Milender.

Plakke kept his swift start going by throwing a pair of touchdown passes, including one to his favorite target, Milender.

The junior signal caller also ran for a pair of touchdowns.

Superior struck first and often in the first quarter. Senior Silas Acker capped off a long Bobcat drive with a one-yard hop into the end zone that gave the host team a 6-0 lead. The point after touchdown try was good when Milender snared a short pass from Plakke.

A short time later, Milender caught a long strike from Plakke and raced 35 yards into the end zone. A failed PAT try left the Cats with a 14-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game.

That lead would swell by six just minutes later when Plakke flipped a short four-yard TD pass to sophomore wideout Lucas Kovalsky, boosting the Bobcat advantage to 20-0.

The swarming Bobcat defense quickly shut down the Trojan offense putting the ball back in Plakke’s hands. He took full advantage of the situation, topping off another Superior drive with an eight-yard scoring run. A successful PAT pass from Plakke to Acker put the home team up 28-0.

Before the first quarter came to an end, the Bobcat defense forced a Trojan safety, giving the Cats a 30-0 lead and the ball as the opening 12 minutes ticked to an end.

Plakke opened the second quarter scoring by running nine yards for a touchdown. He then threw a quick toss to Milender for the point after touchdown and the Superior lead blossomed to 38-0.

Midway through quarter number two, Bobcat sophomore Chase Woodson scooped up a Troy fumble and returned it for yet another Superior touchdown, which was capped by a successful Kovalsky PAT run.

Trailing 46-0, Troy finally got on the scoreboard for the first and only time as Grant ran 78 yards for a touchdown. The PAT was no good, leaving Superior with a 46-6 lead at halftime.

Through three games this season, Troy has been outscored 202-18.

Superior got things going quickly in the second half as Milender broke free for a 38-yard touchdown run in the opening portion of the third quarter. Kovalsky caught the PAT pass from Plakke and the Bobcats lead mushroomed to 54-6.

Before the third quarter came to an end Superior would strike one last time as Woodson scored his second touchdown of the game on a three-yard TD stroll.

Freshman Colton Baughman ran for the PAT to wrap up all scoring on the night.

On defense for the Bobcats, Issac Miller recorded eight tackles for the game.

The Superior win sets up a showdown this Friday evening in Thompson Falls against the unbeaten Blue Hawks. Game time is 7 p.m.
