Tyler Vassar of North Idaho College shot a 5-under-par 135 for 36 holes to win medalist honors at a Northwest Athletic Conference men’s golf match which concluded Tuesday at Grays Harbor Country Club in Aberdeen, Wash.

Vassar won by four shots for NIC, which finished second by one stroke behind Bellevue. James Swan of NIC tied for third with an even-par 70.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do,” NIC coach Russell Grove said. “It’s early in the season and we haven’t had a lot of good practice reps yet, but I still expect much better of the guys. I need the 3-6 spots to step up. We just have to work harder and be smarter.”

In the women’s tournament, Megan Light of NIC tied for eighth, and Caitlin O’Connor tied for 11th at Highland Golf Course in Cosmopolis, Wash.

The Cardinals finished fifth out of six teams.

“We have a lot of work to do,” Grove said. “It’s early in the season and we haven’t had a lot of good practice reps yet, but I still expect much better from the team. Large numbers really got to us this week.”

NIC returns to action in two weeks at an NWAC tournament hosted by Bellevue.
