Too many free bags Lake City Sweeps Sandpoint baseball

Tuesday night’s doubleheader between Sandpoint and Lake City at Memorial Field was symbolic of what it’s like to play baseball in north Idaho during the month of April.
With slight winds and a high of 34 degrees, conditions were certainly less than ideal for baseball.
Nonetheless, the two teams finished out both games of the doubleheader with the Timberwolves sweeping the Bulldogs 14-11, 11-0. .
“We flashed signs of playing really well and then we’d flash signs of the complete opposite,” Sandpoint baseball coach Chase Tigert said. “(During) Game 1 we really just beat ourselves. I don’t know how many free bags we gave up off the top of my head, but it was way more than you can do in order to win a game.”
In Game 1, both teams were hot at the plate, combing for 23 hits.
“I thought we hit the ball really well,” Tigert said. “There is a lot to build on there.”
Despite outhitting the T-wolves 14-9, the game was lost by the amount of walks the Bulldogs pitching staff gave up.
Sandpoint’s three pitchers gave up 13 walks in Game 1.
“Free bags, that’s really what it came down to,” Tigert said. “We had double digit walks with four or five errors in Game 1. You can’t win ball games like that.”
Sandpoint was clinging on to a 4-1 lead following the first inning, but Lake City managed to even the score with three straight walks home.
The teams matched each other's run total in the third to tie the game at seven apiece. Sandpoint then went on a three run spurt to go up 10-7.
Lake City brought home four runners in the fifth to retake the lead 11-10. It’d go on to maintain that lead the rest of the way. The T-Wolves outscored the Bulldogs 7-1 in the final three innings.
“The first game we were a little bit shaky,” Lake City baseball coach Paul Manzardo said. “The one thing I did like is that we competed every inning and we fought.”
After a three and a half hour long Game 1, Lake City seemed ready for the bus ride home, putting Sandpoint away with relative ease 11-0.
“I’m not sure what the difference was in Game 2,” Tigert said. “I tell my kids all the time that the conference is won in Game 2 of a doubleheader. You’re either sweeping or you’re saving face and not getting swept.”
The Timberwolves jumped ahead 5-0 following the second inning and added six runs in the final two innings.
Lake City’s Eric Bumbaugh hit a two-run RBI inside the park home run in the sixth inning to extend the T-Wolves lead to 9-0.
“Everyone was really excited,” Manzarado said. “(Eric) Bumbaugh is a pretty fast and explosive kid coming off the bases. When you’re playing on a turf field and you don’t have anyone between the ball and the fielder, he’s going to score.”
AJ Currie pitched the whole way for the T-Wolves in Game 2, allowing zero runs on five hits and striking out two. He also only walked two batters.
“It’s key when you have a kid throwing in the strike zone,” Manzarado said. “I thought (AJ) Currie had all three pitches working and he was making it easy for our defense.”
Sandpoint went deep into its rotation in this game, using six pitchers.
“I’m kind of confused by it,” Tigert said. “We have the arms and the stuff and the depth.”
The Bulldogs fall to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in Inland Empire League play. They will next play Post Falls in a doubleheader at noon on Saturday, April 16 at Memorial Field.
