BONNERS FERRY — Badger baseball opened up the 3A Intermountain League play on Wednesday, April 13, smashing the Priest River Spartan 10-0 and 14-0.
The Spartans combined only two hits for the doubleheader and were struck 12 times by Teigan Banning in Game One.
“We just couldn’t put the ball in play,” Priest River baseball coach Mark Schultz said. “Striking out 17 times is a lot; however, 15 out of the 17 [Spartans] attacked strike three.”
In the bottom of the first during Game Two, the Badgers led 8-0 and continued to add to their lead until the game was called due to the 10-run rule.
Blake Rice hit a triple down the left field line. He’d go on to score on a passed ball to extend Bonners Ferry’s lead to 3-0.
At the end of the first, Bo Bateman hit a 2-run RBI single to put the Badgers ahead 8-0.
Game One also got called due to the 10-run rule, but this one was more of a slow burn.
Bonners Ferry took charge of the game in the bottom of the first, putting up three runs.
The Badgers added one run in the bottom of the second but were held scoreless in the third. They then went on a six-run spurt in the fourth and fifth inning to take the 10-0 lead.
The Spartans also committed 10 errors between the two games.
The Badgers are 2-0 in league and 5-7 overall. The location for Saturday, April 16, double header against Kellogg has changed and will be played in Bonners Ferry.
