Mary Evelyn Higgs

October 6, 1936 to April 6, 2022

Mary Evelyn “Lyn” Higgs was born October 6th, 1936 in Nassawadox, Virginia to Robert and Abbie Gadsby. Jim, her much adored little brother, joined the family 6 years later.

Lyn often reminisced about her fond memories of spending her summers with her beloved family on Chincoteague Island, Virginia, watching the famous pony roundup, playing at the seashore, and eating her fill of Maryland Blue crabs and oysters.

When she turned 18, she met Robert Jolin and soon started her life as a military wife. Their family quickly grew with five children all born in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. After their final military assignment to Clark AFB in the Philippines, the family moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

In 1982 Lyn was remarried to Roy Higgs and enjoyed a long marriage of 36 years. Lyn and Roy loved traveling the world together. Their most impactful trip was to Israel exploring the Holy Land, which held a deep spiritual significance for them both.

Lyn was a woman of boldness, sass, great dignity, and fierce independence. Lyn suffered a serious stroke in 2014 that paralyzed her on her left side. Roy lovingly cared for her until his passing in 2018. Lyn chose to continue to live alone at their home with minimal assistance for four more years- she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Lyn enjoyed cooking and baking, gardening, sewing, family holiday dinners, the east-coast seashore, singing in many church choirs, and being a part of her children’s growing families. Her most important legacy was passing down her tenacious faith in her Savior to her children.

Lyn passed away peacefully on April 6th surrounded by her family as she listened to the final verse of Blessed Assurance. Her beloved Jesus and her many loved ones in heaven were excited to welcome her home following complications of open-heart surgery. She fought long and hard to the very end, knowing that to live is Christ, to die is gain.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, April 18, 2022 at the Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d’Alene Chapel. Burial will be at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake, Washington at a later day and time.

Lyn will be dearly missed by her five children, Char (Richard) Munsell; Steven Jolin, Susan (Bryan) Barrentine, Rebecca (Bob) Reid, and David (Angela) Jolin, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, her beloved brother Jim and his wife Carole along with their children, and many friends and neighbors from coast to coast.
