Dale R. Woodard, 99

Dale R. Woodard, 99, passed away on Feb. 17, 2022. Dale was born Oct. 26, 1922 in Millwood, Wash., to Harry and Jennie Woodard.

His parents were early settlers in the Spokane Valley. At the time the family settled in the valley, Millwood was named Woodwards Station. Many streets in Millwood were named after the Woodward children. Dale Street named after Dale Woodard is an example. Dale was the last child of his parents. His brothers Victor and Virgil and sister Dorothy preceded him in death.

He attended West Valley High School. After graduation, he served three years in the Army as a Combat Engineer, with duty in Okinawa and Japan. He was discharged in 1946.

After the war, Dale returned to Spokane and worked for a magazine and book distributor. In 1955 he moved to Coeur d’Alene and started his own book and magazine distribution business called Idaho News Agency. He sold the business in 1989 and retired.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty in 1977 and by his second wife Shirly in 2008.

Dale was a man of many talents. He was an accomplished artist, both in fine art and as a cartoonist. He also was an accomplished woodworker producing beautiful lamps on his wood lathe. When he was not pursuing those hobbies, he was constructing large fragile paper and bulsa wood model aircraft.

Dale is survived by several stepchildren: Diana, Glen, Dale, and Brian; and nephews, Gary Woodard and Dalton Van Houten.

He was a member of the Eagles and the VFW. He will be missed by family and all that knew him.

As to Dale’s wishes no funeral will be held. A memorial is scheduled for May 21, 2022, at the family plot in the Hills of Northern Idaho.
