COEUR d’ALENE — The Sandpoint golf team was finally able to see some action on Monday at the Lake City Invitational.

Both the boys and girls finished in third place.

The girls especially shined according to Sandpoint head golf coach Mike Deprez.

The girls were without Demi Driggs and Reagan Samuels so in stepped Hailey Fischer and Claire Loutzenhizer.

Loutzenhizer shot a 128 and Fischer finished with a 131.

“This is really their coming out party,” Deprez said. “It’s their first time exchanging score cards and getting used to the game. I’m happy with their style of play; they just need time under their belts.”

The next competition for the girls will be on Friday.

Audrey Scheffler, Alexa Tuinstra, and Taylor Mire rounded out the girls team.

Scheffler shot a 92. Tuinstra ended with a 90, and Mire had a 102.

“You’re always going to have someone missing,” Deprez said. “Someone is going to be sick or have a test. It’s very rare that you’ll have your full team at the tournament.”

That wasn’t the case for the Sandpoint boys team, however, with its original four players all competing.

Jacobe Gove, Jake Samuels, Joey Aexel, and Merek Bauck all shot in the 80s.

“That’s what we’ll need,” Deprez said. “That is basically right where the competition will be at districts. If you’re a fan of the Bulldogs and golf, buckle up.”

The fifth spot for the Bulldogs has been alternating between several golfers; on Monday, John Wimer was in the spotlight, shooting a 117. This was Wimer’s first varsity golf tournament.

“He’s upset when he looks up there,” Deprez said. “I had to remind him that it’s your first round of golf; you’ll get better.”

For the boys, its next competition will be on Thursday at Palouse Ridge.
