The Priest River track team is riding a wave of momentum.

Last Saturday, April 17, the Spartans took home two team trophies at the Barry Startz Memorial Relays event at Newport High School.

For the boys, this was their second team title of the season. For the girls, it was their first team trophy since 2012.

“The coaching staff is very proud of how all the kids performed,” Priest River track coach Jared Hughes said. “It was a total team effort with every athlete scoring in at least one event. It’s too hard to choose individual leaders for the meet with so many athletes contributing in a big way.”

Elisheva Davis, Allyson Barton, Lizzie McCracken and Allyson Dickenson led the way for the girls who scored 110 points as a team, 31 points ahead of second place Deer Park.

McCracken received gold in the 1600 meters event with a time of 6:25.20.

Priest River’s 4x100 meter relay team had Barton, Davis, and Dickinson, and they finished in third place with a time of 56.15.

The same group of three won the throwers 4x100 meter relay as well.

As an individual, Barton took first in the discus and shotput events.

The sophomore set a personal record in the shot put with a distance of 30 feet and three inches.

She threw 95 feet in the discus event to take the gold as well.

As for the boys, they took first place at the Barry Startz Memorial Relays Event by 86 points. Several athletes from the boys team also set marks that put them among the best in the state in the 3A classification.

Matyus McLain continued his dominance in the discus event, throwing 136 feet.

This was a personal best for the junior. His mark is currently ranked fourth in the state in the 3A classification.

Shane Gambler set a personal best time at the Intermountain League Dual in the 300 meter hurdles event with a time of 42.35.

That mark is good enough to be ranked fourth in the classification.

Erik Deem improved his mark in the pole vault at the Barry Startz Memorial Relays.

Deem cleared 12 feet, which is the third-best mark in the state.

The Spartans will host its next meet, the 25h annual Priest River Invite, on Saturday, April 23.

Currently, there are 15 teams signed up to compete. The Spartans are still looking for help officiating in the field events.
