PR baseball drops DH with minimal bodies

KELLOGG — The Priest River baseball team only brought up nine players in its doubleheader loss to 3A Intermountain League foe Kellogg.
“Unfortunately, we had a sickness run through our team,” Priest River baseball coach Mark Schultz said. “We played some guys out of position and I thought they played very well.”
The Spartans fell to the Wildcats 13-1, 14-4.
Priest River had some players playing outside of their normal positions, but the players who were active rose to the occasion, according to Schultz.
“We had some outfielders playing some infield spots,” Schultz said. “They really stepped up to the challenge and I’m really proud of them. They didn’t roll over.”
First year player Charles Bennett returned to the mound for the Spartans. He threw 50 pitches, giving up five runs on two hits.
But his eagerness to learn is his best quality, Schultz said.
“He’s the type of player where if you explain something, it sticks,” Schultz said. “He not only pitched today but went out and played some positions he’s never played before.”
Colton Brooks, who pitched in the second game, also got thrown into some spots he wasn’t used to playing in.
“He’s played in the outfield forever,” Schultz said. “I said ‘I need you to play first’ and he came in and played first and third.”
None of the outfielders had any objections about playing in the infield, according to Schultz.
With less bodies and experience, the Spartans continued to make errors which have been a backbreaker for them this season.
Throughout the two games, Priest River committed 14 errors.
The Spartans fell to 2-9 overall and 0-4 in Intermountain League Play. Priest River next plays Bonners Ferry in a doubleheader at 11 a.m. at home.
