COEUR d’ALENE — Alex Karns and Ryan Schneider led the way for Coeur d’Alene in the opener, and Camdyn Martindale answered for Lake City in the nightcap as the Vikings and Timberwolves split an Inland Empire League baseball doubleheader Friday at Coeur d’Alene High’s Ted Page Field.

Coeur d’Alene won the opener 12-5, before Lake City took the nightcap 6-1.

Karns went 3 for 3 and scored two runs in the opener for Coeur d’Alene (11-5, 6-4 IEL), and Schneider hit a three-run double in a five-run second inning as the Vikings took a 6-0 lead.

“Our offensive approaches at the plate were great, and it was the best offensive game we’ve put together all season,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “We were able to move runners around. Owen Benson gave us a good start on the mound, pitching to contact and our defense was making plays being him.”

In the second game, Martindale struck out six and scattered seven hits in a complete game for Lake City (6-7, 6-4), which remained tied for second in the tightly packed IEL behind Lewiston (12-4, 7-3) and just ahead of Post Falls (9-7, 7-5).

“Real happy for Camdyn Martindale,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “He’s been through a lot in his high school career, and it was nice to see him pitch a complete game against Coeur d’Alene. Us being a young team, we needed somebody to step up, and Cam (a senior) did just that.”

After Coeur d’Alene scored once in the bottom of the fourth, Lake City answered with four in the top of the seventh and never looked back.

Joe DuCoeur, who finished 2 for 4 and scored three runs, led off with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Parker Rimpau. Nate Weatherhead doubled to put runners on second and third, and Cooper Smith’s two-run single gave the T-Wolves the lead for good. Ethan Taylor’s RBI single made it 4-1.

Manzardo moved DuCoeur from shortstop to catcher and inserted Weatherhead at short, and he praised the defense of Weatherhead and Smith at second base.

“I thought our defense played well,” Manzardo said. “They made the routine plays, and Cam threw ground balls.”

“They were able to string together some hits and we didn’t approach our at-bats the same as the first game,” Karns said. “Cam Martindale pitched a great game and did a fantastic job of throwing strikes. We just didn’t come out with the enthusiasm to win we needed to. We’ll get it turned around and fixed as we head to the end of the season.”

Lake City plays host to Post Falls on Tuesday in an IEL twinbill.

Coeur d’Alene is next scheduled to play an IEL doubleheader next Saturday at Sandpoint.
