SPIRIT LAKE — The Priest River baseball team dropped its tenth game in a row with a doubleheader loss to 3A Intermountain League foe Timberlake.
The Tigers defeated the Spartans 22-0, 14-0.
“It’s kind of the same song and dance, unfortunately,” Priest River baseball coach Mark Schultz said. “We’re not hitting the ball well and we’re making too many errors.”
Priest River has struggled at the plate, and that continued against Timberlake.
Throughout the two games, the Spartans combined for just three hits.
“That’s the million dollar question,” Schultz said when asked about why his team's batting has dipped in the last couple of games. “We hit a lot of balls during practice last night. It just comes down to experience and understanding philosophy. 20 games is not enough for a young team. We need to work during the offseason.”
Originally, after the game was over, Schultz was going to give his team the day off from practice.
“We’re in a little bit of a funk,” Schultz said. “I told the kids we were going to take tomorrow off and recover.”
Once Schultz said this, three players raised their hands wanting to come in and hit.
After that, Schultz made today’s practice non-mandatory.
“I’ll have about three quarters of the team there, and for those who don’t show up, I don’t blame them,” Schultz said. “We’re such a young team, but they’re so fun to be around. They make me laugh when I’m annoyed and it’s just so fun to be around them. They never give up.
Priest River fell to 2-15 overall and 0-10 in IML play. It will next play Kellogg on Saturday, April 30, at home. This game will serve as the Spartans’ senior day.
