HAYDEN — A Northern Lakes Fire Commissioner has been working for free.

Public records obtained by The Press show that Douglas Duncan has taken no wages or benefits since he took office in January.

The other four commissioners were paid between $600 and $1,000 between January and April 27. They also received medical and vision benefits, while Duncan did not.

Duncan, who was elected to the Subdistrict 5 seat last November, told The Press his reasons for refusing pay and benefits are “personal.” He declined to elaborate further.

“I’m not in it for the money,” he said Thursday.

Duncan is the husband of Kootenai County Commissioner Leslie Duncan, who is running unopposed in the May 17 Republican primary.
