SPOKANE — Sandpoint tennis coach Kent Anderson was “shocked” by the Bulldogs’ performance during the first day of the Inland Empire tennis tournament in Spokane on Friday.
Sandpoint has one team remaining that’s competing for first and second place, that being the number three doubles team of Anthony Ramires and Jacob Dawson.
“I’m not really surprised by that,” Anderson said. “They’re so athletic and they’ve been winning their matches. I just put them together about a week and a half ago and they didn’t give up a single set today.”
The Bulldogs also have one doubles team and two individuals remaining in the consolation bracket.
Maise Brazill, the girls number two singles player is one of the two individuals.
“She unfortunately lost in the first round,” Anderson said. “Once she got to the consolation side of things, she started to roll.”
Matthew Norton at boys number one singles will also be competing in the second round of the tournament.
“We play a lot of these 5A schools and he’s been getting beat,” Anderson said. “It’s been a really good experience for him because he’s getting unbelievable. He’s becoming tournament tough.”
Freshman Aubrey Knowles and junior varsity call-up Ivan Steinbachs are the final team still alive at mixed doubles.
“They play really well together,” Anderson said. “(Aubrey) Knowles is getting better every day and she’s just a freshman.”
The Bulldogs will take the court again today at 8:30 a.m.
