Big Sky trio named to
Walter Payton Award Preseason Watch List
Stats Perform announced its 2022 Walter Payton Award Preseason Watch List on Wednesday, with three standouts from the Big Sky Conference making the cut.
Montana State’s Tommy Mellott and Isaiah Ifanse, along with the Big Sky’s Preseason Offensive MVP Ulonzo Gilliam Jr. of UC Davis, represented the league on the 35-player watch list. Of the three honorees, Ifanse was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award last season, which saw Eastern Washington’s Eric Barriere take home the prize.
Overall, the Big Sky Conference has won the Walter Payton Award nine times since the honor began in 1987, which is the most of any other FCS conference. After Barriere’s win last year, EWU became the first school to have four Walter Payton Award winners with Barriere joining quarterbacks Eric Meyer (2005) and Bo Levi Mitchell (2011) and wide receiver Cooper Kupp (2015).

His first-career 100-yard game came Oct. 30 at Hawai’i when he rushed for 111 yards on 23 carries, including one score.
