Demo day two brings more action

During the derby, several cars rolled or tipped over. However, no driver appeared to be seriously injured.
Dirt sprayed the crowd as cars rounded corners on the track and grazed the barrier.

MOSES LAKE — The Northwest Ag Demolition Derby wrapped up day two on Wednesday, its final day of crashing, smashing and rolling at the Moses Lake Roundup Arena.
Those whose cars survived day one returned to the arena for day two along with some new faces. With a few more tipped cars than the day before, the derby saw some familiar-faced winners and a few new to success.
The winner of the ’80s demo, Christopher Johnson of Moses Lake, has been doing the demo derby for at least four years.
“It feels extremely good,” Johnson said. “I’ve been close a few times but never number one, never the trophy.”
Until now.
The 32-year-old said this isn’t the end of his derby career, even though it will be for his car he won with this year. He said he will take all the usable parts he can off of it and start over with a new vehicle.
“I don’t know if there’s a trick. I think it's just you just gotta drive, keep moving, and you got to take your shots when you can,” said Johnson. “Until you’re in the car, it's just really hard to explain what it's like to be out there running. There’s so many noises and things happening that you think the car is falling apart but as long as you’re moving.”
He tries to participate in both the Moses Lake demo and the one in Othello every year.
“I try to support the local shows,” Johnson said. “I live in Moses Lake so Moses Lake’s my home town show. It's the one I always watched as a kid, it’s the one I remember the most.”
Johnson wanted to make sure to thank the Moses Lake Roundup for putting on the show.

Ag issues on docket in 2023 Washington Legislature
OLYMPIA — The 2023 Washington Legislature session included bills to support agriculture. House Bill 1138, concerning drought preparedness, is one piece of that legislation. “We’ve been working on that for two to three years,” said Rep. Tom Dent, a sponsor of the bill. “So we get into a drought in different areas of the state and the drought committee comes together and puts together a plan to help people in the drought-affected area to mitigate the effects of the drought, whether it means through use of emergency wells, financial assistance, (or other measures).” HB 1138, requested by the Department of Ecology, adjusts the circumstances in which the Drought Committee is authorized to convene. The bill amends these circumstances to include when a drought advisory is in effect and when a drought emergency order is in effect.
Legislators request millions in infrastructure funding for Adams Co.
RITZVILLE – Adams County looks to have millions of dollars in federal funds for infrastructure projects approved by Congress through requests by regional legislators. “We are grateful to all the members of our Congressional delegation, each of whom has stepped up to assist with vitally important infrastructure projects for our region,” said Dan Blankenship, Adams County Commissioner... .
Dent proud of committee’s bipartisan effort in 2023 session
MOSES LAKE – Rep. Tom Dent, R-Moses Lake, said that there is a lot he has to be proud of from this session, but the thing he was most proud of was the bipartisan effort to tackle bills by him and several other lawmakers. “I think, for me, there were a lot of wins,” said Dent. “The kind of wins that you don’t see.”
