PREP SOCCER: Defending state 5A champion Lake City girls open with shutout

SANDPOINT — Delaney Moczan, a senior transfer from Las Vegas, scored the first two goals of the season for the visiting Lake City Timberwolves, who blanked the Sandpoint Bulldogs 6-0 in the nonleague season opener for both teams Friday evening at War Memorial Field.

Elliotte Kortus added two goals and an assist for the defending state 5A champion Timberwolves, who scored five goals in the second half.

“We started off slow; I thought Sandpoint was the better team for the first 10, 15 minutes,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “We started to connect some passes and our front line of Moczan and (Georgia) Whitehead and Kortus, they’re just a handful. They just have that ability to wear you down.”

Junior Acaja-Lyn Scott had two saves in the shutout in goal for Lake City.

“It was a really good, solid second half,” Ruchti said. “All three phases — front line, center mids and back line — all clicked.”

Lake City plays host to Lewiston on Monday.

MOSCOW — Not only did the visiting Hawks open their season with a league game — it was a matchup with a fellow 4A school.

“Shoot, a heckuva lot better than last year,” Lakeland coach Kevin Rogge said after the loss to the Bears at the Moscow School District Community Playfields. “Last year, I think, we lost 12-0 and 8-0 (actually, 8-0, 6-0 and 9-0).”

Moscow won last year's 4A Region 1 tournament, stunning Sandpoint in the championship game.

Rogge said freshman Karstyn Kiefer stepped up in the second half.

“We started her as a forward and we pulled her back to midfield (at halftime) and she really shined,” Rogge said.

He said junior Malia Batman, usually a field player, moved into goal in the second half and “did really great” with four saves.

“I like my squad,” Rogge said. “We connected on passes real well, and we’re only going to get better. We have so many new players this year. From where we were the last few years, we’ve improved a heckuva lot.”

Lakeland plays host to Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday.
