COEUR d’ALENE — The defending state 5A champion Timberwolves trailed at halftime before scoring four times against the Bengals in their Inland Empire League opener.

“Lewiston, they’re a young team, but they work hard the whole time,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “We definitely had the run of the play … and we gave up a fluke goal. That was their only shot of the half. We gave it away, and it caught our goalkeeper off guard.”

Reagan Cherry had a goal and an assist, and Delaney Moczan had two assists for Lake City (2-0, 1-0 IEL).

“The difference between the two halves was just efficiency in front of the frame,” Ruchti said. “We had so many opportunities to score; we didn’t find the back of the net. We put it together in the second half. This group, when they get a little more efficient in front of the frame, they can score four or five goals in a half.

“I’m excited to see how we start Thursday (at Moscow), because that will be a good test.”

First half — 1, Lew, No. 2 (unassisted), 38:00. Second half — 2, LC, Emily Medina (Delaney Moczan), 47:00. 3, LC, Georgia Whitehead (Reagan Cherry), 60:00. 4, LC, Elliotte Kortus (Whitehead), 62:00. 5, LC, Cherry (Moczan), 78:00.
