MOSCOW — Records are meant to be broken.

But in the opener?

Coeur d’Alene senior hitter Madi Symons had a school record 33 kills for the Vikings in a 17-25, 25-23, 25-20, 22-25, 15-7 win over the Moscow Bears in the season and Inland Empire League opener for both at Bear Den.

“She’s kind of our go-to player,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “She really came alive in the fourth and fifth set and played a great match.”

Symons topped the previous mark of Megan Ramseyer, who had 31 kills against Lewiston on Oct. 3, 2014 in Coeur d’Alene.

Alexa Stavros had 15 digs and three aces, Gracie Legg 11 digs, Hailey Wuolle 24 assists, Bailey Jaworksi 23 assists, Olivia Naccarato seven kills and five blocks, Gia Janke three blocks and Lindsay Stubbs three blocks for Coeur d’Alene.

“It was just a scrappy match,” Curtis said. “I thought our ball control really stepped it up tonight. There were some long rallies and it was a lot of fun to watch. It was a good match to be a part of. It really felt like a late-season match.”

Coeur d’Alene competes in the Judy Fong Invitational on Saturday in Lewiston.

Lakeland in four

RATHDRUM — Senior outside hitter Payton Peugh had nine kills for Lake City in a 25-22, 12-25, 25-12, 25-13 win over the host Lakeland Hawks in a nonleague match at Hawk Court on Wednesday.

Lila Kiefer had seven kills, Olivia Zazuetta 21 assists and three aces, Kenna Simon five blocks and Ellie Carlson 21 digs against Lake City.

“Lakeland’s a good team,” Kleinberg said. “We tried to stay mentally resilient and we’re going to have a lot of work to do to get ready for them (Lakeland) again in a couple of weeks.”

Earlier, Lakeland defeated Timberlake 25-4, 25-7, 25-6.

Kiefer had 12 kills, Zazuetta 29 assists and seven aces, Carlson 18 digs and Simon four blocks against the Tigers.

“Tonight was a good opening night,” Lakeland coach Kelsie Badger said. “Early season games are always good to tell us as a team what we need to work on. Now it’s our job as coaches and players to take what we’ve learned tonight and put it into action. Overall, I’m proud of the energy the girls brought tonight and am excited to watch this team grow this season.”

Lake City also defeated Timberlake 25-12, 25-4, 25-13.

COEUR d’ALENE — Nate Wyatt posted a hat trick in the first half and Cooper Prohaska followed with his second-straight in the second half, leading the Vikings past the Hawks at Coeur d’Alene High.

“Nate’s been an absolute stud for us,” Coeur d’Alene coach Braden Ridgewell said. “He plays in the midfield and does a great job of building the play up and getting opportunities in the opponent’s 18-yard line. He really wants to put his best foot forward this year, and it’s shown in his last two games.”

Prohaska, who had six goals for the Vikings on Saturday against Post Falls, had four assists on Wednesday.

“He was just looking to get some more guys involved today,” Ridgewell said. “He’s trying to show he’s more diverse, and not just a goal scorer.”

POST FALLS — Senior Rebekah Hines broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 41st minute for the Panthers, who held off the Vandals in a rematch of a 2020 state 3A semifinal match at The Fields.

“I’m really happy for the players to get a strong win against a quality program like McCall-Donnelly, who’s always in the mix for their league title and a contender at state,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “We had strong moments moving off the ball and getting into quality scoring opportunities. McCall-Donnelly’s speed and strength on the ball pushed us and exposed a few areas that we’ll need to continue to work on to be ready for October. I’m pleased with the leadership I saw and what the girls were able to leave out on the field this early in the season.”
