COEUR d’ALENE — A row of superhero standees greeted fans as they entered the Coeur d’Alene Public Library, letting them know they’d come to the right place to celebrate pop culture.
Coeur d’Con kicked off Friday. It’s the first time the free, all-ages fan convention has occurred fully in-person since 2019.
Young Adult Coordinator Angela Flock, who also organized the event, said it’s good to be back after a hybrid event last year.
“It’s a lot better to see faces and see cosplay in person,” she said, adding that the mostly outdoor activities aim to help people stay safe while enjoying their time together.
Hayden residents Lauren and Evelyn Dane were among those who showed up in costume Friday.
The pair made parts of their costumes from scratch, combining those elements with ready-made pieces.
“I like being able to practice makeup skills,” said Lauren, 17, who dressed as Technoblade, a character from the Dream SMP Minecraft server.
Evelyn, 16, created the mask Lauren wore as part of her costume. For her, the appeal of cosplay is bringing enjoyment to others.
“Everybody likes seeing their favorite character,” she said.
The event drew more than 2,000 people in 2019. Turnout was high Friday morning, with families gathered for a kid-oriented story time and cosplayers checking out one another’s looks.
In the past, Flock said she’s always been impressed by those who participate in the convention’s art and cosplay contests. This year is no exception.
“It’s been really incredible to see the creativity that’s being expressed in cosplay and fan art,” she said. “I think it’s important to celebrate that creativity in the community.”
The fun continues today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with crafts, free comic books, outdoor games, an improv show, vendors and more. Contest winners will also be announced.
