COEUR d’ALENE — Elijah Raybell had a goal and an assist in the second half to lead a balanced Coeur d’Alene attack in a 4-1 win over the Lake City Timberwolves in Inland Empire League play at Coeur d’Alene High on Saturday.

Cooper Prohaska also had a goal and an assist for Coeur d’Alene, which tied the game at 1 on a goal by Liam Martin in the 34th minute.

“The game is always an emotional one because of the rivalry,” Coeur d’Alene assistant coach Robbie Harmelink said. “We were proud of the response from our guys after they scored the first goal. To see them bounce back and respond as a team was pretty cool to see.”

Ben Hanigan-Luther gave Lake City a 1-0 lead on a free kick in the 15th minute.

“I felt like we had the upper hand for the first 25 to 30 minutes,” Lake City coach Kevin Jump said. “We lost a little bit of our edge when they scored their first goal. They hadn’t had much success with creating in the final third and then we misread a ball played into a crosswind and they capitalized.”

Prohaska’s goal in the 37th minute on an assist from Zak Wenglikowski gave the Vikings the lead for good.

“We knew how Lake City played and wanted to be prepared for their tactics,” Harmelink said. “It was a full team effort today, which was good to see.”

“We knew that Coeur d’Alene had a good group of seniors and those seniors did well in gaining possession and circulating the ball, particularly in the second half when we were chasing the game,” Jump said. “We’re going to put this match in the rear-view mirror and focus on our upcoming matches.”

COEUR d’ALENE — Being familiar foes, you can expect a little bit of anything when the Vikings and Timberwolves face off on the field.

And again, Saturday was no different.

Senior Elliotte Kortus scored on an assist from Delaney Moczan, the lone goal of the afternoon as the Timberwolves beat the visiting Vikings in an Inland Empire League match at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

“I thought we controlled a majority of the game,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “It was a typical Lake City-Coeur d’Alene matchup. I thought we played well and Coeur d’Alene defended really well. We had our opportunities, but weren’t efficient enough in the final third of the field.”

Lake City also beat Coeur d’Alene 1-0 the last time they met, in the 5A Region 1 championship on Oct. 12, 2021.

“Whenever we play Coeur d’Alene, we kind of expect anything,” Ruchti said. “We know it can go either way each time. Coeur d’Alene is going to get better throughout the season, and it’s our job to get better as well.”
