Two things emerged from Friday night’s 58-6 Mission win over Plains in a Montana High School 8-man football game.
One: Mission is likely to have a very good season.
Two: Plains is getting better, with its young but eager-to-win team and better things are surely on the way.
For now, the Horsemen fell behind big and early on the field in St. Ignatius. The Bulldogs, who are rated by most area 8-man coaches as one of the teams to beat this year, got on the scoreboard first, scoring in the opening minutes of the quarter, then again just a few minutes later.
Mission struck again on a four-yard scoring run by Bryce Humphrey that put the Bulldogs up 22-0 following a successful two-point extra points conversion.
Before the quarter was over the home team would take advantage of a Plains fumble. Several plays later the Bulldogs scored again to up their lead to 28-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The Bulldogs were just getting warmed up.
Less than one minute into quarter number three, Bulldog Lex Lafrombois scored on a 50-yard run, that, when coupled with a two-point PAT gave the Dogs a 34-0 lead. They added another touchdown via rushing on a short five-yard stroll by Canyon Sargent. Another successful PAT gave the Bulldogs a 44-0 lead at halftime.
Neither team scored in the third quarter as both defenses looked for working player combinations and tightened some defensive gaps.
Mission would add another rushing TD in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, putting them up 50-0.
Then, with six minutes to go in the final quarter, Nicholas Hill ended the Plains scoring drought when he broke free from 44 yards out and cruised into the end zone for a Horsemen TD.
Mission added one last touchdown in the final minute of the game and converted the two-point PAT try to lock up the 58-6 win.
Plains’ next game is this Thursday at 7pm when they host the Superior Bobcats on the field at PHS.
