SAN FRANCISCO — Freshman guard Cobi Campbell hit back-to-back 3-pointers with a little over three minutes remaining in overtime, helping push North Idaho College past host San Francisco City College 97-89 in the championship game of the Golden Gate Classic on Saturday.
“It was a real dogfight tonight,” NIC coach Corey Symons said. “They’ve won 20 of the last 22 regional titles, they're really good. They press you all the time and we had to fight off that storm. It was a big win for us.”
San Francisco City College (6-2) is the No. 1 team in the preseason California Community College Athletics rankings.
Sophomore Julius Mims, who finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds, fouled out with four minutes left in regulation for NIC (7-0).
Xavier Bailey, who finished with 18 points, made six free throws in overtime to seal the win.
“We had some guys step up off the bench and pulled us through,” Symons said. “Cobi finished with one turnover, which was unbelievable with the defense he was seeing. It was nice to see our guys go out and compete at a high level on the road.”
Mezziah Oakman, a 7-foot post from Concord, Calif., finished with 17 points for San Francisco City College.
NIC hosts the Lilac City Legends on Thursday night.
