The Glacier High School speech and debate team clinched a win on home turf at the Western Regional Tournament over the weekend, amassing 201 overall points.

Although state testing and illnesses meant a number of students weren’t competing in the tournament, Glacier Head Coach Greg Adkins said he was happy with the outcome.

“When you are down some of your top kids, it would have been easy for us to make excuses, and we talked about not letting that be the story of the weekend. We asked the kids to step up and still compete for each other, and I felt like that happened all weekend,” Adkins said.

On the heels of Glacier, Flathead High School claimed second place with 189.5 overall points. Columbia Falls High School, which placed fourth out of the 21 teams competing, earned 86 points overall, enough to rank first in Class A, B, C division. Whitefish High School placed ninth overall with 30.5 points, ranking third among A, B, C schools.

“It's always fun to compete at home, and the kids had a blast this weekend,” Flathead Head Coach Shannon O’Donnell said. “We saw some real competitive gains, from both our speech squads and our debate squads. Flathead outperformed Glacier on the speech side, and they got us on the debate side of things this weekend. It was a tight race to the finish, which made for a fun competition.”

Adkins also thanked the community for its support at the Kalipsell tournament.

“The tournament was a success, and we are thankful for the community's support. Speech and debate is strong in this area, and part of that success has to be attributed to the continued support we receive from this community.”
