QUINCY - Folks around the Columbia Basin are excited to celebrate the holiday season with hot cocoa, decorated trees and plenty of Christmas lights and ornaments. That includes the people around Quincy that put on The Lights of Christmas, a display of spirit near Quincy.

“It’s something that’s really become a long-standing tradition,” said Harriet Weber, director of operations for Quincy Valley Historical Society & Museum which helps with the show.

Weber said the Rotary Club of Quincy, Future Farmers of America, 4H and other groups and individuals help put up the light display along I-90, SR 28 and SR 281.

The tradition started in the 1980s when Scott Libbert set up the first display and it spread to other areas. Since then, it’s grown with individuals and groups contributing to the display.

This year was the first year a bus tour of the lights was offered and Weber said the intention is there to do it again next year. This year’s two bus tours for adults quickly sold out, she said.

Many of The Lights of Christmas's displays are mounted on farm equipment such as irrigation hardware or other tools of the trade.

Displays include traditional Christmas-oriented items such as this one depicting Mary and Joseph heading to Bethlehem, but some of them tend toward more modern Christmas traditions as well.

What is a Christmas lighting display without a touch of Santa?

This display reminds us to appreciate those who serve and won't necessarily be able to be home for Christmas.
