UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — Lake City jumped on Central Catholic of Portland from the tip — literally — and rolled to a 70-49 victory over the Portland school in the semifinals of the Curtis Winter Classic on Friday night at Curtis High.

Blake Buchanan had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Lake City (5-0), which will face the hosts from Curtis (6-0) in the title game tonight at 7. Kolton Mitchell also scored 17 points, Nathan Hocking 15. Zach Johnson had five rebounds, Deacon Kiesbuy seven points and four assists for the Timberwolves, who shot 62% (31 of 50) from the field.

“We played hard; we really got after it, from start to finish,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “A lot of energy, on the floor and on the bench. When we play that hard, we’re tough to handle. Especially on defense, we got after it, from the opening whistle to the end. They’re a pretty good team.”

Lake City scored off the opening tip, Hocking finishing with a flush.

“Nathan had a heckuva game,” Winger said. “He really had a solid game, both offensively and defensively.”

Junior Marley Zeller hit four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 26 points for Central Catholic (3-1).

Curtis, last year’s state 4A champions, feature point guard Zoom Diallo, whose offers include Gonzaga, UCLA and Arizona.

“The best team in Washington against one of the top teams in Idaho. This is what we wanted; why we came here,” Winger said. “They’re a great defensive team, and have some very good offensive weapons. They’re really good at taking the ball to the basket.”

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — The Trojans took a three-point lead into the fourth quarter, but mistakes down the stretch cost them against the Chargers from Kent, Wash., at the Curtis Winter Classic at Curtis High.

“We missed 3 layups in overtime that hurt us, and gave up an offensive rebound that led to a free throw — things we can't do in a tight game,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said.

Junior guard Neil McCarthy scored 17 of his game-high 23 points in the first half for Post Falls (0-7). He hit four 3-pointers, three in the second quarter.

“Neil shot the ball well, and did a good job within our system getting good shots,” McLean said.

Tyras Blake added 11 points and eight rebounds for Post Falls, and Alex Shields had five boards.

Jamari Harris scored 20 points, Dominic Randhawa 19 for Kentridge (4-2).
