The Sandpoint Sharks swim team made big waves with fast swims at the Spokane Winter Invite at Whitworth University.
A total of 15 swimmers represented the team including five first-time competitors Bruin Williams, Calvin Williams, Dexter Williams, Rosie Rognstad, and Rowan Rognstad.
Oliver Leavitt stood out among the team this weekend and was named Swimmer of the Meet for the sharks. He dropped a total of 29 seconds for all of his events from the morning and afternoon sessions.
“Oliver qualified for finals in every event he swam in,” head coach Sara Zwink said. “He had a positive attitude, encouraged fellow teammates and asked questions about his swims.”
Another top performer was Andrew Ford, who turned in personal bests in the 200 breaststroke (3:25.38) and 50 breaststroke (39.85).
Of the 15 swimmers who attended the meet, seven of the athletes placed in the top six and advanced to the evening finals session.
“McCoy Jensen had a clean sweep for all three of his events with a first place in everyone,” Zwink said. “Lou Foust also had a first-place finish in the 50 breast (39.44) and a strong third place in the 50 back.”
There were also several personal bests for swimmers in the 10 years and below age group. London Leavitt dropped over 13 seconds in the 50 breaststroke and over 10 seconds in the 100 freestyle.
The Sandpoint Sharks continue to hit the pool for training as they move closer to the championships in March. The team will be holding tryouts in the coming weeks to continue to build the team. Tryouts will be held December 19-22, all starting at 4 p.m.
“We are excited to have this opportunity to expand our awesome team,” Zwink said. “We have room for swimmers at every level, from novice to advanced.”
