COERU d'ALENE – While old man winter seems to be making any body of water in North Idaho a sheet of ice right about now, there are much less risky and inviting alternatives for some holiday skating locally.
Frontier Ice Arena in Coeur d'Alene is in the midst of its "12 Skates of Christmas" event, where the warm room and rink are transformed into a holiday-themed attraction.
Held from today until Jan. 1, General manager Dan Eloe explains that the event is simply a way for the non-profit to get into the Christams spirit and bring some holiday cheer.
"We've done it for the last eight years," he said. "If you remember the song, that's kind of the theme!"
Those who attend one of the skates will be treated to a display of Christmas lights, music and trees from the moment they walk in.
"We decorate the rink, put Christmas lights up, and try to put together different packages for people to come down, have hot cocoa, and enjoy the ice," Eloe said.
Once on the ice, skaters can take in the lights hanging around the rink and from the rafters while also admiring the large decorated tree at center ice to the sounds of Christmas music.
The Frontier Ice Area skate guard bear may even make an appearance to hang out with younger skaters.
12 Skates of Christmas sessions are scheduled from noon to 5:30 p.m., Dec. 23-Jan. 1. The Christmas Eve and New Year's Day skates will be from noon to 3 p.m. The rink will be closed Christmas Day.
Skating costs $7 and skate rentals cost $2. For more information, call 208-765-4423 or visit frontiericearena.org.
CDA On Ice, located in downtown Coeur d'Alene at McEuen Park, also continues to offer skating outdoor sessions, but with amended hours from today until Jan. 6. Sessions are available from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., except on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.
