PRESS CHRISTMAS FOR ALL: Grandma fights for grandchild
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 3 years, 4 months AGO
As part of the annual Press Christmas for All campaign, we share with readers the stories of those applying for help. This is one of those stories.
“Amelia” would do anything for her granddaughter.
This year, the disabled 58-year-old Post Falls woman went from being homeless to moving into her own apartment. Then she found herself faced with a decision: take in her infant granddaughter or see the 1-month-old baby enter foster care.
“My daughter would have lost her,” Amelia said.
The choice was easy — but starting over with a baby is hard.
Amelia doesn’t have consistent child care, which makes it hard to work. But she won’t give up.
“I have to keep up with my bills and not lose my apartment and my granddaughter,” she said. “I’m disabled, but I have no choice but to do everything I can to make this work.”
Her hope is to find a remote job so she can be at home with her granddaughter while supporting herself.
Christmas for All paid for repairs to Amelia’s vehicle. That gift, made possible by donations from the community, allows Amelia to drive safely to and from work, as well as to the food bank she relies on to feed herself and her granddaughter.
Each year, Press readers donate generously to Press Christmas for All. Every penny raised is distributed to Kootenai County residents. All overhead costs are covered by The Hagadone Corp.
The gift recipients are our neighbors who are struggling, including the elderly, people with disabilities, veterans, the homeless and those with mental illnesses. Many who seek assistance from Christmas for All are working, but living in poverty.
Beneficiaries of Press Christmas for All keep their dignity while the community provides a hand up to help get them back on their feet.
Press Christmas for All is managed by The Hagadone Corp., with assistance from CharityReimagined.Org. It is a legally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit, run entirely by volunteers.
