COEUR d’ALENE — A Hayden man is in jail, accused of raping a family member on Christmas Eve.
The 35-year-old man is charged with rape and incest, both felonies, as well as with sexual battery, a misdemeanor.
The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office responded around 1:30 a.m. Dec. 25 to a report of a sexual assault at a Hayden residence that reportedly occurred hours before.
A teen said a family member had raped her after giving her alcohol. The man allegedly attempted to rape her a second time but was interrupted, she told police.
When deputies arrived at the residence, the teen reportedly ran outside “in terror” and begged the deputies to take her somewhere else.
Around the time of the alleged attacks, police said the teen made repeated attempts to reach another party by phone for help. She sent numerous text messages pleading for help and made multiple phone calls that went unanswered until later, according to court documents.
Police arrested the 35-year-old suspect at the scene. They also collected physical evidence.
The teen was transported to Kootenai Health.
Judge Timothy Van Valin ordered Tuesday that the suspect be held on $20,000 bail.
The Press is not naming the suspect at this time because that would reveal the identity of the victim. The Press tries to protect the privacy of victims.
In Idaho, both rape and incest are punishable by a maximum of life in prison.
