BONNERS FERRY — Grama J’s Cafe will be closing with owner Judy Sowards saying she wants to concentrate on her family.

“After taking some time off, I have made the difficult decision to close Grama J’s Cafe,” Sowards said in a social media post.

She said she will be leaving Bonners Ferry to spend more time with her grandchildren in Arizona.

Grama J’s Beignets opened more than two years ago. Sowards wanted to bring the flavor of the South to North Idaho through her pastries that are native to New Orleans. Soon customers asked for other dishes, so Sowards changed the business to Grama J’s Cafe and expanded her menu.

That expansion grew into lunch menu items like Monte Cristo sandwiches, brisket po’boys, daily quiche specials along with crepes.

“It has been my pleasure to meet and serve you. I love every one of you who has made Grama J’s such a special chapter of my life,” she said. “To my team, thank you for all of your hard work, kindness and support. You’ve made Grama J’s more of an experience than I could have ever imagined.”

Grama J’s Cafe was contacted for comment, but did not respond before deadline.

Grama J’s Cafe will be open one last time Saturday, Feb. 5, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to say goodbye and cook one more round of its famous buns.
