Idaho high school all-star basketball games scheduled to return to NIC in March

COEUR d'ALENE — The 19th Idaho high school all-star basketball games are scheduled for Saturday, March 12 at North Idaho College.

The girls’ game will begin at 1 p.m. and the boys’ game at 3:30 p.m.

The event is scheduled for its usual home at NIC for the first time since 2019. The 2020 event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and last year's event was moved to Post Falls High because of COVID restrictions at NIC.

This event, sponsored by Idaho Central Credit Union and the Best Western Coeur d’Alene Inn, is the only basketball all-star event featuring selected athletes from throughout the sports writers and media representatives nominate Idaho senior basketball players for the game.

The games will feature a Region versus Metro format, and will include a 3-point shooting competition for both boys and girls, as well a slam-dunk contest between the games.

Admission will be $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Zags' Holmgren named to Malone Award Top 10

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Gonzaga's Chet Holmgren was named one of the 10 candidates for the 2022 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Thursday.

The award recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men’s college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates in November, which has now been narrowed to 10.

Heading into tonight's games, Holmgren is fifth in the nation shooting 63.3 percent from the field. Holmgren is seventh in the country averaging 3.37 blocks per game and seventh with 64 blocks. Holmgren is also eighth in the nation shooting 74.2 percent inside the arc. He tops the West Coast Conference in blocks per game, field goal percentage and defensive rebounds per game (6.9). The freshman is second in the league in rebounds per game (8.7) and fourth in three-point field goal percentage (45.6).
