LEWISTON — Top-ranked Lake City suffered its first loss of the season Thursday night, as the 5A Timberwolves let a 12-point halftime lead get away in a 62-57 loss to the Lewiston Bengals in Inland Empire League play.
Lewiston (13-5, 3-3 IEL) hit 12 3-pointers, with Braydon Forsman hitting his fourth with some 40 seconds left to snap a 57-all tie.
“We didn’t really do what we wanted to,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “Our game plan was to run them off the 3-point line, and we didn’t do a very good job of that. We had three different double-digit leads and didn’t put it away.
“Lewiston, they got us there last year, we knew they would give us the whole kitchen sink, and I thought we handled that pretty well. The second half, we really handed them some stuff. We did not play well offensively, we threw the ball away, missed easy ones. We let them get a sniff, and they took advantage, and the crowd got rolling … ”
Kolton Mitchell hit four of Lake City’s eight 3s and finished with 20 points for the Timberwolves (17-1, 5-1). Blake Buchanan added 13 points.
Lake City missed three 3s in the final 30 seconds, including one in the waning seconds that would have tied the game, but rimmed out.
Jace McKarcher hit four 3s and scored 18 points for Lewiston. Forsman also had 18.
“With this, we’ll see how we handle it,” Winger said. “I think these kids are really competitive. If we take it the right way, we can use it as a tool to get better.”
On Saturday, Lake City plays host to Moscow in IEL play. The 4A Bears (11-6, 4-0) now lead the combined 5A/4A league, based on winning percentage.
