100 Years Ago — 1922

Presta to emigrate

Mike Presta will leave this week for the Okanogan country in Washington where he expects to close a deal for an 800-acre ranch, 160 acres of which is grain land, the balance being good grazing. Mr. Presta is one of the pioneers of the Priest River vicinity, having been here for 30 years. After he closes the deal, his family will follow him.

90 Years Ago — 1932

Planning city hall

The village board met Monday evening in special session to consider the advisability of the construction of a city hall. A good representation of taxpayers attended and voiced their views. The majority talked in favor of construction. In the end, a motion made by Theobald, seconded by Campbell, will be submitted to the taxpayers to authorize a bond issue to finance the building.

80 Years Ago — 1942

Doolittle sawmill burns

The Doolittle sawmill burned to the ground sometime between midnight and 1 o’clock Monday morning. The mill is to be rebuilt and is expected to again be running in about a month.

70 Years Ago — 1952

Townteam upsets Bonners

The Priest River townteam made it two wins in a row when they came from behind to upset a taller Bonners Ferry team 48-42. High point honors went to Floyd Wylie with 10 points, followed by Jim Low and Jim Krizenesky with 9 points each.

60 Years Ago — 1962

Crowell crash-lands

First Sgt. Clarence A. Crowell, Fort Lewis, Wash., escaped injury when his single-engine Interstate Cadet ran out of gasoline and flipped in a crash landing in a pipeline clearing six miles north of Sandpoint. He missed his destination here because of dense fog. He was coming to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Crowell.

50 Years Ago — 1972

The river stopped

Residents along Priest River at a stretch between rapids down river from Crazy Creek report water flowing sluggishly, pushing along masses of icy slush, sometime between 10 and 11 a.m. last Thursday when it stopped altogether. The dead river comes to life again at the next set of rapids, and there is water again, they said.

40 Years Ago — 1982

Youth win at Hoop Shoot

Priest River Junior High students Troy Douglas and Muffy White, both 13, and elementary student Cameron York, age 8, each took first place in their age division at the annual Elk’s Hoop Shoot Jan.15 in Sandpoint.

30 Years ago — 1992

Laclede Gold Cup 4-H announced the start of Lynette Rembowski’s annual six-week cake decorating project. We’re lucky to have her share her time and talents with us — and Kay McMillan’s kitchen!

20 Years ago — 2012

Giving Back

Longtime Priest River resident Norma Abraham donated $500 toward the skateboard project, saying she wanted to give something back to a city that had been so good to her and her late husband.
