COEUR d’ALENE — A man previously accused of beating an infant is facing additional charges after police said he tried to drown a teenager and committed other violent acts.
Travis A. Cook, 44, of St. Maries, is charged with two counts of injury to a child, domestic battery in the presence of a child, attempted strangulation and aggravated assault, all felonies.
In a related, ongoing matter, he is also charged with two counts of attempted strangulation.
The charges stem from December, when the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report that Cook had spanked a crying baby hard enough to bruise the child’s buttocks.
A witness provided police with photos of the child’s injuries, as well as an audio recording that allegedly depicted Cook hitting a different child.
Cook allegedly pinned the child down and hit her head against the floor.
Police said “horrifying screaming” was audible in the recording.
When questioned by police, Cook allegedly admitted to spanking the baby hard enough to bruise, as well as to pushing and slapping two other individuals.
Police arrested Cook on charges of attempted strangulation. Since then, he has remained in jail on $85,000 bail.
Evidence of other alleged offenses surfaced after Cook’s arrest, according to court documents.
A teen boy described to police multiple instances when Cook allegedly attempted to drown him.
He said Cook once held him down in a partially filled bathtub and also forced his head into a bucket of water, holding him in place so he couldn’t breathe.
Last year, Cook allegedly slapped the teen on the side of the head hard enough to perforate the boy’s eardrum.
Cook also allegedly put the teen in chokeholds and punched him with a closed fist on numerous occasions.
A girl told police that Cook had choked her multiple times. She described experiencing tunnel vision while Cook choked her, saying she feared she would lose consciousness and never wake up.
Cook allegedly choked a woman on multiple occasions, sometimes to unconsciousness.
She said Cook once threatened her with a knife, stabbing it into the wall immediately next to her.
Prosecutors filed additional criminal charges against Cook this week.
First District Judge James Stow ordered Thursday that Cook be held on $250,000 bail in the new case.
