Feb. 13, 1972 – McEWAN RE-ELECTED

Curtis McEwan of Sandpoint was re-elected to the Bonner General Hospital board of trustees at the hospital’s membership meeting Friday night. McEwan will serve an additional five year term on the five-member board. His re-election was unanimous.

CAPT. JAMES BENOIT ENDS OVERSEAS DUTY

Capt. James Benoit, Staff Judge Advocate, USAF visited in Sandpoint in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Benoit, after two years of overseas duty on the island of Crete in the Mediterranean. During his overseas tour, Capt. Benoit had temporary duty in Turkey, Germany, England and Athens, Greece. Of his experience in Greece, he said, “Someone once said, ‘If you can’t love Greeks, you can’t love anyone.’ I concur.” Capt. Benoit, who attended SHS, is finishing his final 11 months in the service at McClelland Field, Sacramento, Calif., as a member of the Judge Advocate Staff. He left Sandpoint on Feb. 12.

REMMERS SEES FORMER JAPANESE SOLDIER

Steve Remmers was in the right place at the right time to see the Japanese Army sergeant captured a few weeks ago on Guam. Remmers, with the Navy, was present when Shoichi Yokoi, 58, who had hidden in the jungle since the war’s end in 1945, was brought to the base. Remmers told his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Remmers, that the former soldier was the most frightened person he had ever seen. The man was hospitalized for observation before returning to Japan.

Exception to the W.C.T.U.’s plagiarizing of the world war service star flag to designate places where liquor is “prohibited” is taken by an American legion post composed of newspaper writers in San Francisco. The journalists term such usage as “an insult to those for whom the star stood.”

NEWS FROM KOOTENAI

Next Tuesday evening the Four L’s and the Three L’s will have an old-fashioned dance for the members of the local and their families. The dress will be old-fashioned as well as the style of the dances.

The Kootenai parent-teachers’ meeting will be held February 17, during Child Welfare week.

V.R. Robbins has the contract to furnish the Kootenai school 60 cords of wood.

SOCIETY

The ladies of the Fortnightly card club entertained their husbands at a bridge dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A.R. Nelson in Milltown last Thursday. A delectable chicken dinner was served to 14 couples at 6:30 o’clock followed by cards. The St. Valentine’s idea was carried out with superb effect. On the menu were biscuits in heart designs, with tiny candy hearts replacing the usual after-dinner mints. The rooms were decorated with red paper hearts and the ladies wore red head-bands with huge red hearts upon them, and the gentlemen wore crowns of myriads of small hearts.
