Leonard A. Malloy was born Aug. 19, 1928, in Olympia, Wash., to William A. Malloy and Mabel Ida Hardy Malloy. He graduated from Olympia High School and entered the Navy at 17 years old. He served from 1946-1948. While in the Navy, he was stationed on the USS Curtis as an Electronics Technician Third Class and participated in “Operation Sandstone” in the Marshall Islands.

After his honorable discharge, Leonard returned to Olympia and married his high school sweetheart, Julia Gregor. With the aid of the GI Bill, he received a bachelor’s in business from St. Martin’s College in Olympia. He and Juel then moved to Warrenton, Ore., and in 1953 settled in the Spokane Valley.

In 1953, Leonard, his brother, Bob and their common father-in-law, John Gregor, began Idaho Veneer Co. in Post Falls, Idaho, which continued as a family-owned business for over 60 years. He was well known and respected in Post Falls for his warm generosity and continual commitment to community. Some of the more notable donations spearheaded by Leonard and Idaho Veneer Co. included land for the Post Falls Fire Dept., substantial amounts of building materials for the covered picnic area at Q’emiln Park, the Post Falls Senior Center, and the Post Falls High School announcers’ booth. In addition, the infamous Lions’ Haunted House was due in large part to Leonard’s generosity and his commitment to family centered activities.

He and Juel were also active in their church. They were instrumental in establishing Immaculate Conception Church in Post Falls and the cloister for the Carmel of the Holy Trinity in Spokane Valley.

Leonard always offered a smile and a helping hand to all he met. He treated everyone with respect and genuine interest and was always happy to share a good story and a hearty laugh.

He leaves behind five children: Marlene (Pat) O’Dea, Pat Malloy, John (Susie) Malloy, Dan (Wendy) Malloy, and Mary Lou (Dan) Ryan, 17 grandchildren, and 29 great-grandchildren, one sister, Julijeanne and one brother, Jim Malloy. He is predeceased by his wife, Juel, and four brothers.

Rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 22, at Immaculate Conception Church in Post Falls, Idaho. Funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. on Feb. 23, at Immaculate Conception Church with burial immediately following at St. Joseph Cemetery, Spokane Valley, Wash.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to:

Carmel of the Holy Trinity, 4027 S. Wilbur, Spokane Valley, Wash., 99206.
