POST FALLS — Billed as the “coolest date of the decade” by CNN, 2/22/2022 was as good a reason as any for Treaty Rock Elementary School students to celebrate what might otherwise have been an ordinary Tuesday.

Mr. Bright’s first grade class created festive hats, emblazoned with “Two’s-day.” Teachers, students and Principal Katrina Kramer wore tutus in honor of the date. Third grade student council member Grady Forkner dressed exactly like his “twin,” Kaven Conner.

Treaty Rock is in its second year of operation. It has about 420 students after starting with about 360.

“We’ve grown — a lot,” Kramer said. “A lot of kids are returning back to school from being online.”

The school has an active student council of seven. Grady and council pals Michael Dubs and Kaylee Flodin work with other council members to create videos that are viewed by the entire student body.

“We give information about what’s coming up,” Michael said. “We have too many ideas.”

Students are excited to see their classmates on screen.

“The first time they watched mine they said, ‘Hey, that looks a lot like you,” Kaylee said.

Brimming with good ideas to get the student body engaged, the industrious council has also begun working on a school newspaper.

“I kind of just came up with the idea. Then I was like, ‘There’s no way we could pull this off,'” Kaylee said. “Then I said, ‘Oh wait, we could pull this off!'”

The students have plans to create surveys gleaning information from the student body. They also want to take time to visit each class and share ideas.

Kicking around what to call the student paper, “Treaty Rock News” was a frontrunner.

Treaty Rock students are looking forward to Read Across America on Monday. In honor of the national event, Superintendent Dena Naccarato will visit the school in a Cat-in-the-Hat costume, Kramer said.
