COEUR d’ALENE — Lakeside junior guard Vander Brown admitted that Thursday was an off night shooting for him.

Fortunately for the Knights, he was right on when it mattered the most.

Brown made two free throws with 19.8 seconds remaining to put Lakeside up by one, then forced a turnover at the buzzer to preserve a 57-56 win over the Genesis Prep Jaguars in the 1A Division I District 1 championship game at North Idaho College.

“I’ve had better shooting nights and some times, you just have off nights,” Brown said. “I felt like I could make them when it counted.”

Lakeside beat Genesis Prep twice in the regular season, winning at The Courts at Real Life in Post Falls 47-43 on Jan. 25 and again 59-50 in Plummer on Feb. 4.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game,” Lakeside coach James Twoteeth said. “We’ve been struggling a little bit with free throws lately, so we’ve been doing drill after drill, and it finally paid off. Vander really stepped up with some confidence and hit two big free throws.”

Lakeside (12-3), which won its second straight district title, will face Logos (15-7) of Moscow in a state 1A Division I play-in game at Lake City High on Saturday at noon. Lakeside defeated Logos 69-67 on Feb. 7 in Moscow.

Genesis Prep finished 8-12.

Genesis Prep took a 56-55 lead on a pair of free throws from Ayson McLuskie with 28.9 seconds remaining.

“That’s a very well-coached team,” first-year Genesis Prep coach Lon Morast said. “Vander Brown is quite a player, and we knew he was going to be a handful. I was proud of how our guys competed. They had a couple of kids that stepped up and hit some key 3-pointers. Hats off to them. They deserved to win and they got it going when they needed to.”

Josh Kee hit a 3-pointer to give Lakeside a 53-50 lead with 3:11 remaining. Joey Specht of Genesis Prep answered to even the game at 53 on the Jaguars' next possession.

“It’s awesome,” Twoteeth said. “I’m proud of them for just playing through it. Sometimes you’ve just got to play through. Even (Nyati) Vassar, the last couple of games. He had four fouls tonight, and had gotten a technical and he stepped up and took a huge charge late in the game. It shows what kind of character he has, and I’m really proud of him.”
