PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Sandpoint notches first win over Kellogg since 2018

KELLOGG — Sandpoint grabbed control in the second quarter, using a 17-4 run en route to a 54-36 win over the Kellogg Wildcats in a nonleague game at Andrews Gymnasium, the Bulldogs first win over the Wildcats since 2018.

Kellogg beat Sandpoint 58-53 at Les Rogers Court on Dec. 9.

“Kellogg has a pretty rich tradition,” first-year Sandpoint coach Brian Childs said. “It’s a solid program and it’s hard to win at their place, so it was a pretty satisfying win.”

Ethan Butler had 17 points, 10 rebounds and three assists, Rusty Lee 13 points eight rebounds, three assists and three steals for Sandpoint (4-6). Parker Childs had 12 points and Jacob Eldridge six points, 11 rebounds and three steals.

“I just love coaching Ethan,” Brian Childs said. “I never have to worry about his effort or where his heart is. He gives you everything he has, and it was nice for him to be rewarded today.”

Luke Frohlich scored 12 points for Kellogg (6-5), which finished 2 for 19 from the 3-point line and 6 for 6 from the free throw line.

“We got off to a pretty good start and played a good first quarter,” Kellogg coach Mike Martin said. “In the second, and honestly the rest of the game, we were a little too passive against their zone and weren’t aggressive enough against it and didn’t attack the zone the right way. Butler finished well at the rim and was really solid for them today.”

On Tuesday, Sandpoint visits Bonners Ferry and Kellogg hosts Moscow.

LEWISTON — The visiting Trojans trailed by four points, with the ball, with four minutes left in the Inland Empire League opener for both schools.

Then Post Falls’ youth showed up.

The Trojans missed a shot, and the Bengals took the ball down the court for an and-one by James White.

Post Falls turned the ball over, which led to another and-one for White, who scored all 12 of his points in the fourth quarter.

“We just have to do a better job of finishing games,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “We were right there for 3 ½ quarters.”

Jack Sciortino scored 11 points for Post Falls (3-8), which committed 15 turnovers to six for Lewiston (10-1).

“Three different times they had double-digit leads. When teams go on spurts, we have to limit those spurts.”

Alex Shields had 10 points and six rebounds for Post Falls, which plays host to Chiawana of Pasco, Wash., on Monday.

Jace McKarcher of Lewiston led all scorers with 17 points.

ST. MARIES — Coleman Ross scored 11 of his 19 points in the first quarter for the Lumberjacks, who scored 28 points in the first quarter of a nonleague win over the Badgers at St. Maries High.

“It was good to see everyone getting involved in the action,” said St. Maries coach Bryan Chase, whose team led 42-19 at halftime. “We really focused on playing good man-to-man defense and chasing them off the 3-point line in the first half. Bonners Ferry always plays hard and never gives up.”

Tristan Gentry-Nelson had 13 points and six rebounds, Greyson Sands 12 points, four assists and four steals for St. Maries (7-2), which travels to Lakeland on Wednesday.

Asher Williams scored 18 points for Bonners Ferry (6-6), which hosts Sandpoint on Tuesday.

SPIRIT LAKE — The visiting Knights went to the line 25 times in the second half and overtime, and finished 17 of 27 from the line, in the nonleague win over the Tigers.

East Valley hit two free throws with 6.9 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, then made 7 of 10 in the extra session.

“It was a hard-fought game; we just can’t come out and foul as much as we did in the second half,” Timberlake coach Mike LaFountaine said. “We put them in the bonus early.”

Senior guard Joe Hofstee hit three 3-pointers, went 7 of 11 from the line and led all scorers with 26 points for East Valley.

Zach Yetter tallied 22 points for Timberlake (4-3). Hunter Higgins added 12 points, Taylor Menti 10.

Timberlake returns to action next Saturday at home vs. Priest River in the Battle of the Buck spirit game.
