Richard (Dick) Lee Charter
Born March 6, 1938, in Twin Falls, Idaho. Passed away Dec. 29, 2021, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
He spent his early years with his mother and sister on his grandparent’s farm in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. After moving to Spokane, he attended Arlington grade school and Rogers High School with the class of 1956. At just 17, he joined the Navy and traveled the world aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga. After being honorably discharged he returned full of stories about the places he had seen and people he had met, along with several tattoos. He could never quite explain the skunk tattoo.
In 1966, he married Joy Hallin, the love of his life and wife of 55 years. Dick worked at the Armour Meat packing plant for nine years delivering sides of beef to grocery stores throughout Washington, Idaho and Montana. When Amour closed their packing plant Dick was offered the opportunity to help build URM’s fresh meat cooler operation. He helped develop and eventually supervised it until retiring after 26 years.
Besides his wife and family, his loves all involved the outdoors. Starting with hunting, fishing and camping at their property on the Pend Oreille River, he and Joy spent most of their marriage living on acreage in country settings. Cutting trees, tending slash pile fires and plowing snow with his 4-wheeler are iconic “Grandpa Dick” memories for the family.
He is survived by his wife Joy, daughter Dana Hallin, sons Terry and Scott Charter; brothers Mike Charter, Jamie Almquist (Brenda); sister Nellie Fry; grandchildren Alanna, Tyler, Nathan, Aubree and Alec; great-grandchildren, Trinity, Neveah and Wyatt; nieces and nephews Michael, Jamie, Chrissii, Marty and Danny. He was preceded in death by his mother June Almquist and father Gale Charter.
