PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Henry helps Lakeland avoid the noise, win Paddle

RATHDRUM — In a loud environment such as a spirit game, coaches have to rely on those senior players to get the team into whatever offensive and defense position they see fit.

On Friday, it just happened to be Lakeland senior Bryce Henry’s night.

Henry had 18 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Hawks in a 71-58 win over the Sandpoint Bulldogs in the Battle for the Paddle spirit game at Hawk Court on Friday.

“Bryce was just kind of consistent throughout the game,” Lakeland coach Tony Hanna said. “He had a really good game.”

After the game, Lakeland was awarded the Paddle.

Lakeland outscored Sandpoint 21-11 in the second quarter to take a 40-28 halftime lead.

“We started to make some shots, which helped quite a bit,” Hanna said. “Defensively, we really buckled down and were able to get some steals to get us going. We definitely picked up the momentum.”

Parker Childs scored 18 points, hitting six of the Bulldogs' nine 3-pointers in the game.

“Sandpoint shot the ball really well,” Hanna said. “A lot of times, there’s so much adrenaline going that teams don’t shoot the ball well. But both teams shot the ball well tonight. There was a lot of energy on the court and it’s always a fun game to play. It’s hard to coach because of the noise and you’ve got to rely on the guys on the court, but it was a good battle.”

Scotty Hocking had 14 points, Grant Roth 13 points and 10 rebounds for Lakeland (6-6, 2-1 IEL), which plays at Moscow next Friday.

Sandpoint (4-9, 0-4) hosts St. Maries on Tuesday.

POST FALLS — The visiting Bengals outrebounded the Trojans 37-18 and shot 25 of 45 in an Inland Empire League win at The Arena.

“Lewiston started the game with more of a sense of urgency,” said Post Falls coach Mike McLean, whose team turned the ball over seven times in the first quarter. “They turned it over six times all night, and we’ve got to do a better job in the game. We’ve got to do better defensively and just need to keep finding a way with who we are. The teams in our league are too well coached and efficient. If you give them extra possessions, you’re going to get buried.”

Jack Sciortino and Jayden Butler had seven points each for Post Falls (3-12, 0-4 IEL), which hosts Coeur d’Alene on Thursday.

Braydon Forsman scored 18 points for Lewiston (12-3, 2-2).

KELLOGG — Leading by two points at halftime, the host Wildcats outscored the Tigers 19-7 in the third quarter to win their Intermountain League opener at Andrews Gymnasium.

Led by the defense of Kolby Luna and Luke Miller, Kellogg (7-7) held Timberlake guard Zach Yetter to two points in the second half, after he had scored 11 in the first two quarters.

“We really challenged them defensively at halftime,” Kellogg coach Mike Martin goes. “Timberlake goes as Yetter goes, and we challenged them to ake him out of the game. He was hurting us off the dribble early on.”

Riply Luna hit two 3-pointers and scored seven points in the third quarter for Kellogg, and finished with 16 points. Kolby Luna hit four 3s and added 14 points, and Tanner Groves had 10 points.
