RATHDRUM — Sandpoint boys basketball was unable to breakthrough for a win Friday night at Lakeland.

Near the end of the first quarter, the score was knotted at 17-17. But then the Hawks went on a 14-0 run and never looked back in a 71-58 Inland Empire League victory over the Bulldogs.

Head coach Brian Childs said the game was full of "peaks and valleys" for his team.

"We got off to a pretty good start and were right in it until the end of the first quarter," he said, "and then we go through a drought ... What we have to work on is we're letting our offense affect our defense, and I think they took advantage."

Lakeland outscored Sandpoint 21-11 in the second quarter to take a 40-28 halftime lead.

Sandpoint cut Lakeland's lead to 4 points late in the third quarter on a 3-point play from Jacob Eldridge, but the Bulldogs never got any closer.

"I thought the second half was much better defensively," Childs said. "I thought we did enough in the fourth quarter to put ourselves in a position to still have a chance."

Parker Childs scored 18 points, hitting six of the Bulldogs' nine 3-pointers. Eldridge finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Ethan Butler grabbed 7 points and nine rebounds, and Arie VanDenBerg, Rusty Lee and Randy Lane each had 6 points.

Childs loved the way his team competed, but he said they need to be more consistent offensively.

The Bulldogs (4-10, 0-4 IEL) host St. Maries at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
