DALTON GARDENS — Police shot an armed, suicidal man after an hours-long standoff near an elementary school Monday night.

The man’s identity and condition were not available at press time.

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office responded around 2 p.m. Monday to a residence near Dalton Elementary School, after receiving a call about a man who was reportedly suicidal and armed with a gun.

The school was placed into a safety hold, a precautionary measure less extreme than a full lockdown.

Safety holds go into effect when there is a potential threat in the vicinity of a school.

“The students were safe inside and no one was allowed to come or go during the safety hold,” said Scott Maben, the Coeur d’Alene School District’s director of communications.

At the end of the school day, sheriff’s deputies and officers with the Coeur d’Alene Police Department assisted in the safe release of students to waiting buses and parents.

No students were on school grounds at the time of the shooting.

A reverse 911 call also went out to surrounding residents, informing them of the situation.

Law enforcement reportedly communicated with the man for several hours.

During that time, police said the man repeatedly threatened to shoot officers on the scene. He also allegedly made threatening statements toward people at the school.

Police shot the man at approximately 5:26 p.m., after he allegedly brandished a weapon at them.

Medics treated the man at the scene. He was then transferred to Kootenai Health.

Members of KCSO and CDAPD were involved in the shooting, according to a news release.

No police officers were injured.

The North Idaho Critical Incident Task Force was activated as a result of the shooting.

Idaho State Police are investigating the event.
