MLCA/CCS fights hard against Sunnyside Christian

MOSES LAKE – The Moses Lake Christian Academy/Covenant Christian School (MLCA/CCS) basketball teams went up against Sunnyside Christian School on Tuesday.
MLCA/CCS boys outdid Sunnyside Christian 66-58, while the MLCA/CCS girls fell 34-37 in overtime.
The boys game was neck-and-neck, with the MLCA/CCS Lions ahead by only inches. The first quarter saw MLCA/CCS only one point ahead, 11-10.
In the second quarter, both teams were not budging. Back and forth the teams battled to keep up with each other. Neither team could quite get a jump on the other to pull ahead. Each team scored 17 points, leaving the score at 28 for MLCA/CCS to Sunnyside Christian’s 27.
Coming out of the half, MLCA/CCS was still only one point ahead. They kept grinding and pushing the ball, but Sunnyside Christian was proving to be a tough opponent. Again, the Lions only scored one more point than Sunnyside Christian. The third quarter ended with MLCA/CCS at 40, with Sunnyside Christian on its tail, with 38.
The fourth quarter saw one last push from the Lions, which resulted in their eight point victory. The team managed to score six more points than Sunnyside Christian. The final score was MLCA/CCS 66, Sunnyside Christian 58.
MLCA/CCS senior Pierre Boorman had the game high of 27 points, with five three-pointers and making all 10 of his free throw attempts.
“What a game tonight! The boys found a way to win versus a tough team. They believe in themselves as much as I believe in them. This was a great win for us tonight,” MLCA/CCS head coach Emerson Ferguson wrote in a text to the Herald.
In the girls game, it was just as nerve-racking, if not more. Sunnyside Christian got the jump over the Lady Lions in the first quarter. Sunnyside Christian was able to take the lead 12-7.
In the second quarter, MLCA/CCS was able to fight back and close the gap to only one point. The second quarter ended with the Lady Lions at 16, Sunnyside Christian at 17.
Again, Sunnyside Christian pulled ahead, scoring double the amount of points MLCA/CCS could in the third quarter, putting the Lady Lions behind by six points.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Lions found the strength to push and not only close the gap, but tie the game. The fourth quarter ended with both teams at 31 points, sending them into overtime.
Sunnyside Christian was able to best the Lady Lions in overtime, taking the game 37-34.
MLCA/CCS senior Kali Kast led the Lady Lions with 15 points that night.

Ag issues on docket in 2023 Washington Legislature
OLYMPIA — The 2023 Washington Legislature session included bills to support agriculture. House Bill 1138, concerning drought preparedness, is one piece of that legislation. “We’ve been working on that for two to three years,” said Rep. Tom Dent, a sponsor of the bill. “So we get into a drought in different areas of the state and the drought committee comes together and puts together a plan to help people in the drought-affected area to mitigate the effects of the drought, whether it means through use of emergency wells, financial assistance, (or other measures).” HB 1138, requested by the Department of Ecology, adjusts the circumstances in which the Drought Committee is authorized to convene. The bill amends these circumstances to include when a drought advisory is in effect and when a drought emergency order is in effect.
Legislators request millions in infrastructure funding for Adams Co.

Dent proud of committee’s bipartisan effort in 2023 session
MOSES LAKE – Rep. Tom Dent, R-Moses Lake, said that there is a lot he has to be proud of from this session, but the thing he was most proud of was the bipartisan effort to tackle bills by him and several other lawmakers. “I think, for me, there were a lot of wins,” said Dent. “The kind of wins that you don’t see.”
