COEUR d’ALENE — North Idaho College women’s coach Korina Baker could sense good things watching her team warm up for Saturday’s game against Yakima Valley at Rolly Williams Court.

“We’ve added a little more shooting into our practices,” Baker said. “We were shooting the ball well during warmups, and it definitely helped.”

Laney Smith, who played at Post Falls High, scored a game-high 18 points for the Cardinals, who outscored the Yaks 24-6 in the first quarter of a 70-58 Northwest Athletic Conference win. Kaylee Banks, a freshman from Sandpoint, had 14 points and four assists off the bench for NIC (8-5, 3-2 NWAC).

“We came out with the idea that we’re going to pull the trigger a little more on offense and work on our shooting,” Baker said. “We’re a good shooting team and needed some kids to step up tonight. Laney really did that tonight and Kaylee played really well and contributed.”

NIC finished 10 for 27 from the 3-point line, 10 of 12 from the foul line and outrebounded Yakima Valley 41-31.

“We just found that rhythm that we’d been looking for,” Baker said. “Hopefully we can get on a little run from here.”

Haley Wammock had 16 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for Yakima Valley (0-15, 0-6).

NIC is scheduled to host Big Bend on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
